IPL: Top 5 batting performances for RCB
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batting has always been a strength in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Records also corroborate this fact as the IPL’s highest run-getter is Virat Kohli with 7263 runs in 237 matches at a strike rate of 130.02. Along with that, the highest individual run-scorer in an IPL innings is Chris Gayle, who hit 175 runs while representing the side against Pune Warriors India (PWI) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2013.
This year, Kohli along with Faf du Plessis will carry the responsibility to deliver quality starts to the team while Glenn Maxwell will bolster the team with batting in the middle order. Reliable names such as Dinesh Karthik and Cameron Green are capable of playing the role of match-finishers in the team. Before the 2024 IPL, let’s talk about Bangalore’s five best batting performances of all time.
Here are RCB’s five best batting innings of all time:
5. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 101 against Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2023
Virat Kohli looked sensational for RCB again after four years in 2023. The India batting maestro notched up 639 runs with a couple of centuries in 14 matches. One of his tons came against Gujarat Titans (GT) in a do-or-die game at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Taking on GT’s quality bowling attack, the star player hit his seventh IPL ton.
Riding on his unbeaten 101 off just 61 deliveries, Bangalore posted 197 runs on the board. In the end, the visitors hammered the hosts by six wickets with the help of Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 104 off 52 but Kohli’s fine batting effort was appreciated as he stepped up in the crucial contest and played an outstanding knock.
4. Rajat Patidar’s unbeaten 112 against Lucknow Super Giants in 2022
RCB concluded their journey in the 2022 IPL in the playoff round, losing to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2. Before getting knocked out of the competition, Bangalore beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the iconic Eden Gardens in the Eliminator game.
Playing the knockout match against Lucknow, Rajat Patidar displayed nerves of steel and delivered an unbeaten 112-run innings off just 54 deliveries to his team. His innings included 12 fours and seven maximums. Patidar’s spunky batting helped Bangalore get the better of Lucknow as the KL Rahul-led side could score only 193 in reply to RCB’s mammoth total of 207.

3. Chris Gayle’s 89 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2011
West Indies legend Chris Gayle made his IPL debut for RCB in 2022. Appearing in just 12 games, the southpaw smashed 608 runs with two centuries and three fifties and ended up as the Orange Cap winner. In Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, RCB met Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Caribbean player pulverised the latter’s bowling attack.
Batting first after losing the toss, RCB posted 185 runs on the board. Gayle showcased efficiency with his bat, racking up 89 off just 47 against MI’s quality bowling attack. The veteran hit 14 boundaries (nine fours and five maximums) in his innings. His fiery knock demoralised MI as they surrendered on 142 and failed to chase a huge target of 186. Gayle also received the Player of the Match award for his scintillating innings.
2. AB de Villiers’ unbeaten 79 against Gujarat Lions (GL) in 2016
RCB looked extraordinary in the 2016 IPL season under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, ending their campaign as runners-up. In the playoff contest against Gujarat Lions (GL) in Bengaluru, RCB fans witnessed AB de Villiers’ courageous knock.
Following 159 runs, when Challengers were five down at a score of 29, the iconic batter held his nerves and played an unbeaten 79-run innings off 47 balls and took his team home. Confronting Dhawal Kulkarni and Ravindra Jadeja, illustrious names such as Kohli, Gayle, and Shane Watson fell cheaply.
After the collapse, the Protea player stood at the crease and dismantled GL’s bowling unit. Along with Stuart Binny, de Villiers stitched a rapid 39-run partnership off just 25 deliveries. However, Binny became the victim of Jadeja but the veteran didn’t lose faith and built a 91-run stand with Iqbal Abdulla in just 52 deliveries. de Villiers also became the recipient of the Player of the Match award for his match-winning innings.
1. Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 against Pune Warriors India (PWI) in 2013
Chris Gayle scripted history with his bat for RCB in the 2013 IPL edition. Against Pune Warriors India (PWI) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, he became the fastest centurion with his 30-ball hundred. Batting first, RCB posted 263 runs on the board which is the highest innings total in the cash-rich league.
Gayle produced a 175-run knockoff 66 balls and became the batter to score the most runs in an innings. His knock shattered PWI’s confidence completely as the visitors could accumulate only 133 runs. The West Indies legend also got the Player of the Match award.
