Delhi Weather: Several Flights Delayed Amid Low Visibility, Capital Freezes At 7°C

Delhiites on Monday woke up to a chilly morning with dense fog covering the skyline. The dense fog led to low visibility which resulted in the delay of several flights at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Monday marked the eighth consecutive day when flights were delayed amid low visibility. The mercury dipped to 7 degrees Celsius whereas it was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday at 11:30 pm. The cold forced people to sit around bonfires in order to keep themselves warm.

The strip lights present at the runway of the airports were barely able to keep the visibility up to a certain distance.

#WATCH | Delhi: Several flight operations delayed at IGI airport due to low visibility amid the fog. pic.twitter.com/LtnxljVRed
— ANI (@ANI) January 22, 2024

Winter and fog have been posing a number of challenges for Delhi. A number of flights were delayed at the IGI Airport even on Sunday due to low visibility due to fog in the city, reported news agency ANI. Meanwhile, inclement weather also slowed rail traffic to and from the nation's capital. Around 11 Delhi-bound trains were running late yesterday due to low visibility as a result of fog in many parts of the country.

Several areas in North India have been experiencing severe cold wave conditions for the past few days.

Earlier on Sunday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) tweeted "Visibility at Delhi-Palam reduced to 400 meters at 0200 IST to 100 meters at 0230 IST of today and it further reduced to 00 meters since 0300 IST of today."

Visibility at Delhi-Palam reduced to 400 meter at 0200 IST to 100 meter at 0230 IST of today and it further reduced to 00 meter since 0300 IST of today. pic.twitter.com/V22T9C3GqZ
— India Meteorological Department (@Indiametdept) January 21, 2024

The IMD predicts that dense to extremely dense fog conditions will persist across North India till Tuesday before the intensity decreases.

ALSO READ | Delhi Govt Mulls Hybrid Learning Mode For Schools To Cope-Up With Bad Weather Conditions
