In the modern age, we all thrive for edge of the seat action thrillers. Larger audience gets excited whenever there is a super over to play. It also implies the fact that both teams have fought neck to neck. Now they have one more over to outplay each other.4

Mostly, we associate super overs with T20 cricket. But surprisingly most runs conceded in a super over is in a most recent ODI game. The game has advanced so much that we get to see galore of runs even in the super overs. We will revisit some international matches which saw most runs conceded in a super over.

West Indies and New Zealand are the two teams to feature twice in this list. Though Windies have one win and one loss in the mentioned matches, New Zealand came second twice. All other teams featured only once. And except the India vs New Zealand match, all other matches saw high scores in the first half of the super over.

5. Kuwait- 19 runs vs Bahrain, 2022 (T20I)

In the month of August in 2022, Bahrain toured Oman and played a five-match T20I series against Kuwait. In the very first match, the world saw a super over clash between them. Batting first, Kuwait posted a score of 166 runs. While chasing the score, Bahrain were reduced to 96 for 5 at the end of the fourteenth over.

From there, David Mathias and Haider Butt put on a splendid partnership. They scored 166, stretching the game to a super over clash. Then, it was all Haider Butt's show. He alone scored 18 runs off the six balls he faced. He hit boundaries thrice. One extra run came off the wide ball, making it 19 in total.

It looked difficult for Kuwait to score 20 off 6 balls. They were up against Veerapathiran, Bahrain's most successful bowler that day. He successfully defended 20 runs as Kuwait fell short by 11 runs.

4. India- 20 runs vs New Zealand, 2020 (T20I)

India's tour of New Zealand back in 2020, saw two back to back edge of the seat thrillers in the T20I series. The third match at Hamilton had team India bat first and put on 179 runs on the board. At one point, the Kiwis were cruising through, but Shami's last over brilliance saved India from a loss. The match then went to a nail-biting super over.

Kane took guard against India's premier bowler Jasprit Bumrah and smacked him for 10 runs in two consecutive balls. Then Guptill made it 17 with a boundary off the last ball. For India, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul came out to chase. To score 18 runs in the super over wasn't going to be easy in New Zealand's backyard.

For the first four balls, it felt New Zealand had got hold of the match. But the dramatic last two balls snatched victory from the hands of Kiwis. Needing 10 off two, Rohit Sharma hit two magnificent sixes and sealed the series for India. India ended up scoring 20 runs in the super over.

3. Canada- 22 runs vs USA, 2021 (T20I)

During a match between Canada and the United States of America, the world saw a 22 run super over. The match was played at Antigua and was a part of T20 World Cup's American Region qualifier back in 2021. Chasing a score of 142, USA ended up leveling the score.

USA carried forward that confidence going into the super over. Steven Taylor and Xavier Marshall came to the crease to face Matharu. Taylor managed to hit two consecutive sixes before getting out. Then his batting partner Marshall ended two consecutive fours. This assault put USA on 22 runs super over.

USA ended up winning comprehensively by 8 runs. It was a commendable effort from the USA to pull off an important victory over Canada. At one stage, they were struggling, but in the end they put up a record score in super over to win the match.

2. West Indies 25 runs vs New Zealand 2008 (T20I)

This match was the first ever super over contest in a T20I match. Chasing a score of 156, West Indies ended up scoring just one shy. Chris Gayle was one man army for them, as he picked up two wickets and then scored 67 runs with the bat. Even he couldn't ensure the Windies a win in the 20 overs time.

But once the match got into the super over, it was Gayle's show in true sense. He started off with a six off Daniel Vettori over deep mid-wicket. But then his batting partner Xavier Marshall, who just featured in this list playing for the USA, got run out. It was a tough situation, because one more wicket and the Caribbean side were out. But the universe boss stood tall and hammered Vettori for 18 runs off the next four balls.

Even Gayle got a standing ovation from the crowd. By then, it was WI's match to lose. To achieve a score of 26 in just six balls was an impossible task back then. New Zealand ended up losing two wickets with two balls to spare. This match marked the start of a new era in T20 cricket that the entire world is experiencing now.

1. Netherlands 30 runs vs West Indies, 2023 (ODI)

One of the most exciting games in recent times saw an ultimate face-off between the West Indies and the Netherlands in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. In the group stage match, Windies set a target of 375 in front of the Netherlands. They thought it would be a cakewalk for them, but little did they know what the future held for them.

Netherlands almost crossed the line, but Alzarri Joseph struck twice to keep his team up for super over the battle. Logan van Beek walked in along with his captain Edwards, and they were up against experienced campaigner Jason Holder. But from the very first ball, intentions were clear that they wouldn't hold back. Van Beek produced a super over masterclass.

Every ball bowled at him was dispatched either for four or six. Holder looked dejected, shoulders went down. The scorecard read 4, 6, 4, 6, 6, 4; the game almost got over for WI. They ended up losing two wickets scoring just 8 runs. This emphatic victory boosted Dutch's confidence. A great entertainer to sum up the ICC CWC qualifier.
