IPL: Sunrisers Hyderabad's net worth and sources of revenue

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are one of the successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under the leadership of David Warner, the team won the title and showcased their mettle in 2016. In 2018, they qualified for the finals for the second time but could not go all the way. However, they lost to MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on the main day and couldn’t lift the trophy.

Talking about their off-the-field achievements, SRH are the fifth-richest franchise in the cash-rich league, with a net worth value of INR 498 crore. After the conclusion of the T20 extravaganza every year, Sunrisers go home with the big bucks. For years, the Hyderabad-based franchise has earned a lot of money through the league.

Talking more about it, let’s have a look at SRH’s net worth and source of revenue

1.  Media rights

Franchises in the league bank on the Board of Contol for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) earnings from the IPL media rights. As per BCCI’s revenue distribution system, the board removes its part from the media revenue and shares the remaining amount among the franchises. The title-winning squad gets the highest percentage of the collection.

In 2022, the richest cricket board sold the media rights package for the 2023-27 IPL seasons for INR 48,390 crore. This auction attracted a lot of eyes as it made the league the second-most successful sporting league in the world, following the National Football League of the United States (US).

This incredible deal will benefit the 2016 IPL champions SRH, too, as all the IPL franchises are set to witness a rise in their revenues. As per a few reports, there are some estimations that the profit of Sunrisers might get doubled in the future due to the sale of media rights.

2. Sponsorships

Along with media rights, sponsorships also become important for franchises to extract money. According to a few reports, sponsors pay 20-30% of the total revenue for the teams. In 2013, SRH made its debut after replacing Deccan Chargers. During their ten-year journey, Sunrisers partnered with renowned brands such as Puma, Wrogn, Red FM, UltraTech Cement, SpiceJet, and MakeMyTrip.

In 2023, SRH signed the Cricket NFT platform FanCraze as their official principal sponsor. With this alliance, the Hyderabad-based franchise promotes the cricketing platform through its jerseys. In the ongoing league, FanCraze’s logo is featured on the front of SRH players’ T-shirts.

Another huge brand associated with Sunrisers is the healthcare products company Kent RO. Other brands associated with the franchise are the tire-leading manufacturing company BKT and the Mumbai-based telecommunications organisation, Reliance Jio.

Sunrisers get immense support from their local crowd in Hyderabad. Since their emergence, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium serves as their home ground. In these ten years, the team has delivered a lot of moments of joy to their supporters, who cheer for them every year with their presence at the stadium.

The deep connection between spectators and the team fills the pockets of the franchise owners as they collect a hefty amount by selling stadium tickets and gate passes. According to the home-and-away format, the franchise gets a chance to organise seven match day tickets at their home venue.

This rule benefits the franchise owners as they get the freedom to determine the prices of match tickets and passes. From 2020-22, the franchise couldn’t conduct any games in Hyderabad as the majority of league games were either conducted in the UAE or other stadiums due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

4. Merchandise sales

IPL franchises have realised that their fan following can give back a decent amount of money. In the last few years, India’s sports equipment and apparel business has grown incredibly. According to a report released by Research and Markets, the business is likely to reach up to $40.6 billion by 2027.

Realising this amazing trend, Sunrisers also broke into the sector with its high-quality sports goods and apparel. In 2023, the franchise named Wrogn their official merchandise and lifestyle partner for the 16th IPL edition. Their collaboration with the premium fashion brand will help their fans to get their team’s clothing and branded products easily.

Every year, Sunrisers owners get a sizeable amount during their IPL season by selling their merchandise. With the growing market of the sports merchandise sector, the franchise might witness a jump in their income through this department in the upcoming years.

In their maiden IPL season, SRH performed well in the round-robin stage and qualified for the playoffs. However, their journey ended after losing to the 2008 IPL champions Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator. After their debut season, they didn’t perform up to expectations in the next two campaigns and couldn’t advance to the next round.

In 2016, they performed exceptionally under David Warner and clinched the trophy by vanquishing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Along with the trophy, the franchise also bagged the IPL prize money of INR 20 crore.

After winning their first title, they played their next final in 2018 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, they couldn’t cross the line against MS Dhoni & Co. at the Wankhede Stadium. This time, their journey ended as runners-up after losing to the Yellow Army by eight wickets. For their stunning campaign, they took INR 12.5 crore home.
